Mâconnais
The Mâconnais is an important district of Burgundy producing mostly white wine, and small quantities of red. Further south than the Cote d'Or, the vineyards benefit from more sunshine, less rain and significantly reduced risk of frost.Broadly speaking, viticulture is practiced in a similar fashion to the Cote d'Or, with white wines made from Chardonnay (one of the best known names being Pouilly Fuissé) and red wines either Pinot Noir or Gamay. Most white wines bearing the name 'Mâcon' are vinified in stainless steel, while the wines of Pouilly-Fuissé typically benefit from ageing in oak.
