Chinon Varennes du Grand Clos, Charles Joguet, Chinon, Touraine, Loire Valley, France 2016

Loire, France

JOGUECHINVAREN16

Tasting Notes

Charles Joguet Les Varennes du Grand Clos Chinon Rouge 2016. A top cuvee from Joguet from a 4.5 ha vineyard of eroded sandy clay-limestone soils. The vines are nearly 50 yo now, low-yielding at 40 hl/ha. Winemaking - extended cool pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation in foudres, and racking and MLF in new and second use oak barriques. Long ageing potential. Rich, full-bodied and silky on the palate. Tannins are supple and sandy-grained. There are black cherry and berry notes, and a lick of keen acidity to balance the finish.

Many single varietal Cab Francs can be found in the Loire in the guise of red Sancerre, Touraine and Anjou-Saumur, and the variety is an important component of many Bordeaux blends, particularly in the… Read More
