Vieira de Sousa
Winemaker Luisa and sister Maria are the 5th winemaking generation of family Port House Vieira de Sousa based near Sabrosa, in Cima Corgo the heart of the Douro. The sisters have restored the family company to an independent Port House after nearly a century of selling wines to Churchill’s and Taylor’s. In the wake of the devastating phyloxera infestation that swept Europe in the late 19th century, killing great swathes of vineyards, Vieira de Sousa was forced to sell some vineyard and the family brand name.
Having completed an oenology degree, Luisa took the reins and discovered that the family had enough reserve wines in the cellar to begin their own bottling again. The family name was reacquired and the first new Vintage Port was produced in 2009.
The Port wines that Luisa makes are defined by elegance, with lower residual sugar than many of the large-scale operators in the region. She is rightfully proud in particular of the white Ports which are stunning. The Douro still wines of Vieira de Sousa are made from the same vineyards and are as impressive as the Ports. The Alice range, named after Luisa and Maria’s great aunt, shows an extraordinary freshness and refinement and the Vieira de Sousa reservas demonstrate the opulence and complexity for which the Douro is famed.
We are proud to be Vieira de Sousa’s exclusive importer in the UK.
