Tiefenbrunner
Schlosskellerei Turmhof, in German-speaking NE Italy in the mountainous Sudtirol/Alto Adige region, can trace its roots back to the C13th. Sabine and Christof Tiefenbrunner are the 5th generation to steer the winemaking, informed both by the most modern techniques, and also mindful of tradition. Theirs are true mountain wines, grown at up to 1000 metres on steeply sloping vineyards. Cool, svelte, intense and aromatic whites (Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Muller-Thurgau, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer) dominate, with 20% made up of silky and supple reds (mostly Pinot Noir, Vernatsch/Schiava and Lagrein). As responsible custodians and one of the leading regional winemaking families, they are strong advocates for their patchwork of alpine vineyard terroirs with its mix of calcareous, igneous and sandy loam soils. Matching grape variety with vineyard site is key. In 1910, the family built their own power plant, using the plentiful local water to generate hydroelectric power for both winery and locality. The wines, across the Merus range through the Turmhof selection to the premium Vigna range, are clean, crisp and precise. The Feldmarschall von Fenner Muller-Thurgau is not only the highest planting of the grape, but also where it shows its greatest subtlety and fines
Sustainability
Nature is the driving force for the Castel Turmhof Wine Estate, for over a century the family have generated energy with their own hydropower plant. Although some modern upgrades have been made, the ethos behind sustainable energy remains the same, "Sustainability means having an eye for the next generation in all we do" - Herbert Tiefenbrunner.
